A Carousel Food Web for Unwanted Kings

This week went by fast as we did a lot of review and practice in English. The class finished working with quotation marks and then moved onto review of alphabetical order and capitalization. The students also were able to finish their George Washington biographies they had started a while back. I was very impressed with how much detail some of the students put into their biographies. In reading, we read the story Carousel and discussed how it was related to the other stories in the unit. The students decided that Carousel was like the other stories because in each one, some type of object or food was created. In this story, a young girl received a hand made carousel from her father for her birthday.

In math this week, the students learned their subtracting 9 facts. Many of the students found the pattern when subtracting 9 from a teen number. For example, in 17-9 =8, the students noticed that the answer to the problem was the larger number's digits added together. So in this case 1+7=8, so 8 was the answer. This pattern actually does work for the numbers 10-19. We also worked on creating out own graphs and writing information based on them. The students were able to find how many students voted for each item on the graph and which had the most, least and middle amount.

In social studies, we continued my Mayflower Unit and discussed the reasons why the pilgrims would want to leave England. The students really hit the nail on he head with some of their guesses. They talked about religious freedom, wanting more land and simply to just get away from the king. The next time we met, we went on an interactive tour of the Mayflower and the students labeled parts of the ship. They also had to write why each component was important or what took place there. This was a really engaging activity as the students were able to come up and click on the ship, while it read aloud the text.

For science we continued working on our food chain unit. The students answered some vocabulary questions about what a food web, predator and prey was. They also got to work together and watch a short video (as seen above) about food chains and food webs which helped them tie everything they had learned together. Next week we are going to be working on some activities created by Project Wild that have to do with predator and prey relationships.I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to next week!
